Initiative for development of science

The different initiatives are listed below:

• Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science

"IRIS is the “Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science” (IRIS) is a research based science initiative for students. Department of Science and Technology (DST), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Intel have all come together to create this platform to empower the next generation of innovators.
Since its inception in 2006, the “Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science” (IRIS) promotes and nurtures science and scientific research amongst young Indian innovators. With a sole purpose to recognize and reward outstanding projects, IRIS provides a platform for these geniuses to represent India at global science competitions like the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF).

• Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research Programme

Innovation of Science Pursuit for Inspire Research (INSPIRE) is one such innovative scheme proposed by the Department of Science & Technology for attraction of talent to science. The basic objective of INSPIRE would be to communicate to the youth population of the country the excitements of creative pursuit of science and attract talent to the study of science at an early stage and build the required critical human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the Science & Technology system and R&D base.
INSPIRE Scheme has included three programs and five components. They are i) Scheme for Early Attraction of Talents for Science (SEATS), b) Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) and c) Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC).The schematic diagram of the programme is shown below

• Impacting Research Innovation and Technology (IMPRINT)

IMPacting Research INnovation and Technology (IMPRINT), the first-of-its-kind Pan-IIT and IISc joint initiative, is a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) initiative to address major engineering challenges that the country must address and champion to enable, empower and embolden the nation for inclusive growth and self-reliance. Department of Science and Technology is partnering with MHRD in implementing this program.

• VAJRA Faculty Scheme

VAJRA Faculty Scheme has been conceptualized to bring an international dimension to the R&D ecosystem of India by leveraging overseas scientists’ expertise to the Indian research framework.
The Objectives of the Scheme are:

a) To tap the expertise of International Faculty / scientists/technologists including Non-resident Indians (NRI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) / Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) in highly competitive areas of research and development by offering them adjunct / visiting faculty positions in Indian Institutions / Universities for specific period of time.
b) Engaging NRI / PIO / OCIs in National R&D Programs and thereby deepen their engagement for value addition to various S&T programs, projects and missions of the Government.
c) To catalize possible institutional collaborations through faculty exchange.

Practice question:

1. Which of the following is/are the objectives of IMPRINT?

a) The objective is to develop a roadmap for research to solve major engineering and technology challenges in technology domains relevant to India.

b) The objective is to enables NRIs and overseas scientific community to participate and contribute to research and development in India.

c) The objective is to promote and nurtures science and scientific research amongst young Indian innovators.
