Question #1. The marshall plan was an act of pure benevolence. Critically comment.
The European Recovery Program' also called the Marshall Plan, which offered economic and financial help wherever it was needed, was an economic extension of the Truman Doctrine. The American Secretary said that it was not directed against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos.
Although one of the aims of the plan was the economic recovery of Europe, there was more behind it than pure benevolence. Although in theory, aid was available for Eastern Europe, Russians denounced the whole idea as 'Dollar Imperialism. It was a device for gaining control of Western Europe and a tool for interfering in Eastern Europe. Also, an economically recovered Europe would serve as a big market for American goods. Thus, both an ideological war between the Capitalists and Communists and the economic benefits were the drivers for the Marshall Plan.
But nevertheless, the Marshall Plan played an important role in Europe's rapid recovery from impending economic and political disaster after the Second World War.
Question #2. Discuss the relevance of the non aligned movement (NAM) in the post cold war era.
By the end of the Second World War, decolonisation was pursued by the U.S. and United Nations that led to the independence of several countries in Asia and Africa. The newly merged independent countries were termed as the Third World Countries as compared to the Capitalist and Communist Countries. On account of vigorous exploitation of these Afro-Asian countries by the colonial powers, it was felt mandatory to promote socio economic development. Guided by this progressive idea, these newly emerged independent countries decided to maintain principled distance from bloc politics. In other words, they decided to pursue the principle of Non-Alignment.
Some prominent leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru from India, President Sukarno from Indonesia, President Vasser from Egypt and President Tito from Yugoslavia promoted this principle of Non- Alignment. Under the influence of these leaders, the Afro-Asian Conference was convened at Bandung in Indonesia in 1955. During this Conference, a Charter was signed to promote healthy cooperation among all newly emerged independent countries. Based on this Charter, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was established in 1961 during the Conference at Belgrade in Yugoslavia.
The Non-Aligned Movement continued to exist even after the end of Cold War politics in 1991 to promote South-South Cooperation. The basic reason was to ensure economic growth and development through mutual cooperation. This movement emphasised on protection of human rights, women empowerment and child welfare that remain major challenges till the contemporary time.
The NAM continues to exist so as to prevent human and drug trafficking which is prevalent in developing countries.
The member states of NAM emphasize on establishing the "Democratic World order" by democratizing global institutions like the United Nations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
All these initiatives of NAM Member States establish its relevance even in the post Cold war era
