Cyclone Hamoon intensifies into ‘severe cyclonic storm’ over Bay of Bengal

Context:

According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Hamoon has intensified into severe cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal region.

Cyclone Hamoon:

  • 'Hamoon' has been moving northeastwards with a speed of 18 km per hour.
  • Location of Cyclone: The cyclonic storm has been predicted to get intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is currently centered over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Areas to get affected:

  • It is approximately 210 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 270 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), and 350 km south-southwest Khepupara (Bangladesh).

What is severe cyclonic storm?

  • A cyclonic disturbance in which the maximum average surface wind speed is in the range of 48 to 63 knots (89 to 118 km/h).
  • Severe cyclonic storm with a core of hurricane winds.
  • A cyclonic disturbance in which the maximum average surface wind speed is 64 knots (119 km/h) or more.
