Context
The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), also known as UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), is a flagship initiative by the Government of India aimed at enhancing air connectivity to underserved and unserved regions across the country. Launched in 2016, the scheme seeks to make air travel affordable and widespread, ensuring that every citizen can fly to remote areas with ease.
Under UDAN, financial incentives are provided to airlines to operate flights on regional routes. These incentives include Viability Gap Funding (VGF), tax reductions, and concessions on airport charges. The scheme also promotes the development and modernization of regional airports to accommodate increased air traffic.
By bridging the gap between major cities and smaller towns, UDAN fosters economic growth, boosts tourism, and enhances access to essential services. The initiative embodies the vision of making air travel accessible to all, thus contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the nation.
