Van Dhan Yojana

Context

Van Dhan Yojana is an initiative launched by the Government of India aimed at promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities among tribal communities. Introduced in 2018, the scheme is implemented through the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED). The primary objective of Van Dhan Yojana is to harness the wealth of forest produce and to promote tribal entrepreneurship.

About

Under this scheme, Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) are established in tribal areas. Each Kendra is a cluster of Self Help Groups (SHGs) consisting of around 20 tribal members. These Kendras focus on the value addition of forest products like honey, bamboo, medicinal plants, and other non-timber forest products (NTFPs). By processing and marketing these products, the tribal communities can increase their income and improve their economic status.

The Van Dhan Yojana aims to provide training in sustainable harvesting, processing, packaging, and marketing techniques. It encourages the development of new products and helps in creating a brand identity for tribal products. This not only ensures fair compensation for the tribal gatherers but also promotes sustainable management of forest resources.

The initiative also fosters partnerships with various government and private organizations to enhance market linkages and provide better market access. By empowering tribal communities through skill development and entrepreneurship, Van Dhan Yojana seeks to create a robust and self-reliant tribal economy, ultimately leading to the socio-economic development of the tribes across India.
