Context

Global hunger is continuously rising as per FAO’s State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World Report 2018.

About

  • As per report, the number of people facing chronic food deprivation in the world rose for the third consecutive year to 821 million in 2017, returning to decade-ago levels.
  • This means one in every nine persons does not have enough to feed himself.
  • Increase is driven by:
    a. Economic slowdown since 2008 and persistent slow world growth.
    b. Climate change and environmental degradations undermining the food production levels of many regions.
    c. Political instability and conflicts, especially in areas of already poor and under-developed countries of Africa and Asia.
  • State of Food Security and Nutrition Report is an annual report published by FAO in collaboration with International Fund for Agricultural Development(IFAD), the World Food Programme, UNICEF and WHO.
