Context:

The 11th volume of the Report of the Official Language Committee submitted to the President of India, has received no reactions from the Indian state, except Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

A special status:

  • Official Language Committee: It is a statutory committee constituted to review the progress made in the use of Hindi for the official purposes of the Union & reports to the President.
  • Section 4 (4) Official Language Act, 1963: It makes it obligatory for the President to issue directions “in accordance with the whole or any part of the committee’s report”.
  • Article 343 of the Constitution: It declares that Hindi shall be the official language of the Union. Later, the official language act of 1963 provided for the continuance of English indefinitely as the official language along with Hindi.
