Context:

Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), through Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), is expanding advanced cancer treatment and research facilities with innovations such as CAR-T cell therapy and Hadron Beam Therapy.

Institutional Role

Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) under DAE is India’s premier cancer care institution.
It has established 11 hospitals in 7 States (8 functional, 3 under construction).

Hadron Beam Therapy:

India’s first national-level hadron beam therapy center established at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Navi Mumbai.
Uses proton and heavy-ion beams to target deep-seated or inoperable tumors with high precision, sparing surrounding healthy tissues.
Beneficial for cancers of the brain, spine, and pediatric tumors.

India’s First Homegrown CAR T-Cell Therapy

CAR T-cells are genetically engineered patient’s T-cells designed to identify and attack cancer cells.
Offers personalized treatment at a fraction of international costs.

PREVALL:

An oral liquid formulation of Mercaptopurine for treating Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in children.
Especially useful since children often face difficulty swallowing pills.
First-of-its-kind ready-to-use suspension in India, improving dosage accuracy and compliance.
