Russian Igla-S air defense systems
Context
The Indian Army is set to receive new Russia-made Igla-S Man Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS). These systems, also known as MANPADS, will fill a critical gap in the Indian Army’s Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) capabilities.
About the System
- The Igla-S is a man-portable air defence system (MANPADS).
- It can be fired by an individual or crew to bring down an enemy aircraft
- Range: five to six km.
- The Igla-S system consists of a launcher and a missile, providing portable defense against low-altitude aerial threats like aircraft, drones, and missiles.
- MANPADS are crucial in high mountainous regions, where they serve as the last line of defense for soldiers against enemy aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs.
- The Indian Army is upgrading from its current Igla-1M systems to the new Igla-S, addressing an urgent need for replacement.
- The Army, Navy and the Indian Air Force already have Igla man-portable missiles in their inventories.
