What is the Citizenship Amendment Act?
- The Citizenship Amendment Act, or CAA, enacted in December 2019, seeks to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014.
- These migrants belong to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities.
- The government argues that these religious minorities faced persecution in the three Muslim-majority countries, making it India's moral duty to offer them refuge.
- The CAA is noteworthy as it marks the first instance of granting citizenship based on religion.
