What UPSC expects from candidates?

Exact answer to this question is nothing less than the “brahmastra” of success. But, for much disappointment of aspirants, there are only speculations and no absolute answer for this question. In preliminary exam they just seek the wider knowledge or information base. As syllabus prescribed for Prelims is very vast, candidates can’t be very selective while reading for Prelims and require extensive reading. If you see the questions of Main examination, it is very general and straight in nature. Manoj k jha says,  UPSC does not seek specialized knowledge. UPSC does not appreciate research-oriented answers. It wants display of general understanding and quality analysis of the subjects and effective presentation of the answers. Answers within defined world limit are much appreciated. And Interview is all about presenting yourself in front of the UPSC board.
