Failure to acknowledge existence of manual scavenging is deplorable

Prohibition of Employment of Manual Scavengers Act, 2013 banned manual scavenging but the inhumane exercise still continues.

What the Data say?

• According to government data, 97 per cent of manual scavengers are Dalits.
• Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment revealed that 66,692 manual scavengers have been counted and the majority are from Uttar Pradesh
• According to the Safai Karamchari Andolan, at least 472 people have died cleaning human excreta during the last five years.
