Auroras

Context

Ladakh’s Hanle Dark Sky Reserve has captured stunning images of an astrophysical event similar to aurora borealis - Northern Lights in India.

About

  • When a solar storm comes toward us, some of the energy and small particles can travel down the magnetic field lines at the north and south poles into Earth's atmosphere.
  • There, the particles interact with gases in our atmosphere resulting in beautiful displays of light in the sky. Oxygen gives off green and red light. Nitrogen glows blue and purple.

  • The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles.
  • Most of the planets in the Solar System, some natural satellites, brown dwarfs, and even comets also host auroras.
