Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’

Context

Recently, a deep depression over the southeast Arabian Sea rapidly intensified into a very severe cyclone storm called ‘Biparjoy’.

Key Highlights:

  • According to the India Meteorological Department, Cyclone 'Biparjoy' has deteriorated from an extremely severe cyclone to a very severe storm.

  • It is projected to cross Saurashtra and Kutch in Gujarat, as well as the bordering Pakistan coast between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan near the Jakhau port (Gujarat), on the evening of June 15.
  • Expended Rain fall: From June 13 to 15, the storm might bring extremely heavy rain (above 20 cm) to isolated areas in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Porbandar districts.
  • Destruction: Strong winds and rain can cause significant damage to standing crops, houses, highways, and power and communication poles.

What is the meaning of ‘Biparjoy’?

  • The name of the cyclonic storm, Biparjoy is recommended by Bangladesh, which is pronounced as ‘Biporjoy’.
  • In Bangla, the word Biparjoy means ‘disaster’. The naming was done as per the decree issued by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

How are tropical cyclones named?

  • All the cyclones are named as per the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC).
  • The practice was started in order to ensure quick identification of warning messages because names are presumed to be far easier to remember than numbers or any other technical terms.
  • Worldwide, there are six regional specialised meteorological centres (RSMCs) and five regional Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs) mandated for issuing advisories and naming of tropical cyclones.
