First ‘ring well’ recovered at Keeladi archaeological site

Context:

Every season of excavation at Keeladi archaeological site has unearthed ring wells, an indicator of the advanced water conservation technology that existed more than 2,000 years ago.  However, the recent recovery of a terracotta ring well with thumb impressions creatively carved on a band around its surface highlights the role of aesthetics in civil works.

  • Being excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department, Keeladi excavation site is a pre-Sangam (Iron age) settlement.
  • This site is located 12 km southeast of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, near the town of Keezhadi in Sivagangai district.
