Context:
The recent clashes between India and China have opened the entire border with China to moves and counter-moves from both sides. Diplomatic relations with China are facing a strategic challenge.
Status of India-China Relations
- Absence of Dialogue: There is no strategic dialogue between India and China at the highest levels of leadership and it is a matter of concern.
- Tactical-level talks: It has long been clear that the impasse at the border cannot be managed purely by tactical-level talks as the strategic orientations from both sides are changing.
- How both countries look at each other: India uses a bilateral frame, whereas for China it is India’s relationship with other countries that is the test of where India stands.
