BIMSTEC

Membership and Geography:
- BIMSTEC includes five South Asian countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka) and two Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar, Thailand).
- It bridges South Asia and Southeast Asia, serving as a strategic platform for regional integration and cooperation.
Origin and Evolution:
- Initially launched in 1997 as BIST-EC (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand Economic Cooperation).
- Myanmar joined in December 1997, leading to the name change to BIMST-EC.
- With Nepal and Bhutan joining in 2004, the grouping was renamed BIMSTEC.
Key Objectives:
- To promote multi-sectoral cooperation in 14 identified priority areas, including trade, investment, transport, energy, tourism, environment, public health, and counterterrorism.
- Enhance regional connectivity, reduce trade barriers, and strengthen people-to-people ties.
- Institutional Mechanism:
- Secretariat: Located in Dhaka, Bangladesh (established in 2014).
- BIMSTEC operates through Summits, Ministerial Meetings, Senior Officials' Meetings, and Working Groups.
