Kosovo facing delay in Schengen approval

Context

Kosovo recently gained Schengen visa waiver, becoming the last Western Balkan non-EU nation to do so.

What is Schengen Agreement?

  • Schengen zone in Europe is the world’s largest zone of free movement, which provides visa free travel to signatory countries citizens.
  • the agreement was signed in 1985 among five of the six EU founding members except Italy in Schengen, a tiny village in Luxemburg.

Kosovo’s Visa-Free Access

  • Kosovo became the last western Balkan non-EU nation to be granted visa-free access to Schengen.
  • Citizens of Kosovo can now enter the Schengen zone as tourists for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Why Was Kosovo’s Application Delayed?

  • The European Commission had already cleared Pristina’s preparedness to tackle illegal migration and corruption—essential preconditions for Schengen entry—back in 2018.
  • However, the single most significant obstacle was strong opposition from several EU members which do not recognize Kosovo’s 2008 unilateral declaration of Independence from Serbia.
  • Additionally, Kosovo lacks legal statehood recognition from the United Nations and faces denial from Russia and China.

Kosovo Conflict

  • The Kosovo conflict, which unfolded between 1998 and 1999, was a significant chapter in the Balkans.
  • Kosovo, a province in Serbia, had a majority ethnic Albanian population.
  • In 1989, Serbian President Slobodan Miloševi? revoked Kosovo’s constitutional autonomy, leading to tensions.
  • NATO intervened to end the conflict.
  • The Kosovo War ended in June 1999.
