68 to get Rajyotsava Award as Karnataka celebrates 50 years of its renaming

Context

The Rajyotsava Award will be presented during the celebration of Karnataka Rajyotsava, the state's establishment day, on November 1st.

Rajyotsava Award 2023 recipients –

  • ISRO Chairman S. Somanath, golfer Aditi Ashok, and retired Supreme Court judge Gopala Gowda are among the 68 people and 10 organisations selected for the Rajyotsava Award - 2023 by the Karnataka government for their contributions in different fields.

About Rajyotsava Award-

  • It is the second-highest Civilian Honour of Karnataka state after Karnataka Ratna.
  • Karnataka Rajyotsava Award was initiated in the year 1966.
  • The Rajyotsava Award carries a purse of ?100,000, a gold medal a 20-gram and a citation Rajyotsava award is given in 24 categories.
    • It is conferred in recognition of the contribution in various fields - Arts, Literature, Culture, Education, Industry, Sports, Medicine, Science, Social Service and Public Affairs to the citizens of Karnataka
  • Rajyotsava Award is given every year on November 1 on Kannada Rajyotsava.

Kannada Rajyotsava-

  • Kannada Rajyotsava, also known as Karnataka Rajyotsava, is a significant state festival celebrated in Karnataka, India, on November 1st each year.
    • Kannada Rajyotsava commemorates the day when the state of Karnataka was officially formed. On November 1, 1956, several Kannada-speaking regions were merged to create the state of Karnataka.
  • The state unification brought together different Kannada-speaking regions
    • including the princely state of Mysore, the Kannada-speaking parts of Bombay and Madras presidencies, and other regions, to form the present-day Karnataka.
