Withdrawal of the data Bill was a bad move
Context:
The government has withdrawn the much-awaited “Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill-2019”, bringing a temporary halt to the quest for national data protection law which has been in the work for the last five years.
Reason for the withdrawal:
- The report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), had proposed 81 amendments and made 12 recommendations.
- The government needs to have “a comprehensive legal framework is being worked on”.
- Under the circumstances, the Government has withdrawn the Bill and purposed to present a new Bill “that fits into the comprehensive legal framework”.
