Medical professionals are the core of the healthcare system in a country. In the times of COVID-19, healthcare professionals were at the most risk and yet they played a remarkable role in saving the lives of millions of people. However, there is often news of vacancies in hospitals, issues of poor health infrastructure and state wise variation in health accessibility. Though the government has taken steps in this direction like Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) for the bottom 50% of the population and various State Government extension schemes, many issues still remain. Thus, this data story aims to highlight the status of medical professionals and health infrastructure in the country.
The data story has largely been prepared by using AISHE 2019-20 report, Economic Survey 2020-21, NITI Aayog’s report ‘Health Insurance for India’s Missing Middle’ and the data reported recently by the government in Parliament.
