Special Officer to mitigate Human-wildlife conflicts

Kerala Chief Minister PinarayiVijayan, has

decided to appoint a special officer in the rank of a Chief Conservator of forest in thewayanad district to mitigate the accelerating human-wildlife conflict in the district.

Role of Special Officer

  • The special officer, holding the rank of a Chief Conservator of Forest, will spearhead efforts to address these challenges.
  • Their mandate includes finding non-lethal solutions that protect both humans and wildlife.

Other Measures

  • The command control centre of the officials of Revenue, Forest and Police Departments should be strengthened
  • A war room should be set up with the officials of the three departments.
  • A coordination committee would also be set up with the full support, of civic body members.
  • MGNREGA workers will assist in clearing undergrowth in private plantations.
  • Restoration works of trenches and fencing on forest fringes should be completed quickly and a people’s committee with ward members should be constituted to watch the movements of wildlife where the fencing works have been completed

Compensation

  • A sum of ?11.5 crore as compensation to the kin of the deceased and those who sustained injuries in wildlife attacks.

India becomes top buyer of Venezuelan crude in Dec, Jan

India has reclaimed its position as the top buyer of Venezuelan crude oil after a hiatus of over three years.

Background

  • In 2019, the United States imposed sanctions on Venezuela, affecting its oil sector.
  • In October 2023, the US temporarily eased sanctions on Venezuela’s petroleum sector.
  • This move allowed oil exports without limitations for a six-month period.

India’s Import Resurgence

  • In December 2023 and January 2024, India emerged as the top buyer of Venezuelan crude.

First-ever Digital India future SKILLS Summit inaugurated in Guwahati

The first-ever Digital India Future Skills Summit brought together luminaries from industry, academia, and government to deliberate on strategies for shaping India’s talent landscape in the digital era.

  • It was inaugurated by Union Minister Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
  • The summit facilitated over 30 strategic collaborations between the National Institute of Electronics and IT (NIELIT) and industry giants like Intel, HCL, Microsoft, Kyndryl, IIM Raipur, IIITM Gwalior, and Wipro.
  • Panel discussions covered themes like Semicon India and IndiaAI, dissecting the future skills landscape.

Other Announcements

  • Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar also announced Assam’s ambitious plan—a semiconductor packaging plant worth nearly Rs 25,000 Crore. This move aims to position Assam as a hub for cutting-edge technology.
